What health class forgets to teach us about health

Written by Lindsey Kaszuba

I'm about to tell you something that will blow your mind. Ready? Here it is...what we eat is a secondary energy source. ðŸ¤¯

What really fuels us are our energetic foods or non-food sources of nourishment. Having healthy and happy relationships, a fulfilling career, a movement practice, and a mindfulness practice are the four energetic foods. These are the foundations of what actually motivates and nourishes our innermost beings. The more fulfilled we are in these areas, the less we rely on physical food to fill those voids. Let that sink in. We become less dependent on food when we fill our emotional and energetic cups.

In fact, many cultures and belief systems practice fasting to restrict physical food in order to receive more energetic food. Think about the last time you were wholeheartedly happy, completely satisfied with your life, and just felt complete. What thoughts come to mind? I'm sure it wasn't about what you were eating at the time.

I'm guessing you thought about times of fulfillment, joy, love, family time, and feeling most like yourself. It’s never really about the food, it’s about the emotions behind the food.

Take some time to explore the relationship between the physical foods you eat and your energetic foods. Write down everything that comes to mind, then take one simple step today to strengthen one of your energetic foods. When we are out of alignment with ourselves, we begin to develop habits that do not feel good to us. Focus on bringing more balance to all aspects of your life, and you'll notice that those patterns fade away to make room for the ones that feel great.

Now that you know it's never about the food, the next time you notice yourself going back into old habits, check in with yourself and see what you genuinely need.
