Is hiring a health coach worth it?

Written by Lindsey Kaszuba

What is a health coach?

A health coach works with clients to help them improve their overall health and achieve their goals. After learning about you and your lifestyle, the coach creates a personalized plan that includes small, attainable changes that have a significant effect on overall health. The health coach serves as a valuable mentor, cheerleader, and wellness authority, supporting clients in feeling their best. A health coach focuses on the root cause, not just the symptoms.

What a health coach is not.

Because health coaches are not doctors, they do not diagnose, treat, or prescribe. Health coaches differ from nutritionists in that we focus on overall health and lifestyle, including but not limited to food choices and nutrition.

how am I different from other coaches?

My coaching is high-touch, tailored-to-you coaching program that focuses on you and your unique struggles and challenges.

First, we take an in-depth look at your relationship with food, movement, and self so you can be aware of habits that aren’t serving you. Rather than skipping breakfast so you can get the kids out the door and grabbing the first thing you can get your hands on for lunch, we’ll figure out what actually feels good (and what doesn’t) so you can be confident about the choices you’re making.

Together, we’ll uncover the stories you tell yourself that are keeping you stuck in old habits. Maybe that pesky little voice in your head is constantly nudging you to eat junk food, skip your workout, or whispering you aren’t good enough. Instead of feeling like you have to workout or be on a never-ending diet to maintain your weight, we’ll hone in on actions that actually feel good. What you do will align with who you want to be. The result? No more living in a constant loop of guilt and regret. You’ll stop second-guessing yourself because you’ll be clear on how you want to feel and why.

We’ll focus on building long-term strategies so no matter what life throws at you, you know what to eat, how to move, and how to calm your mind. Kids woke you up early? That’s ok, you workout anyways. Lunch with your team? That’s ok, you know what to order because you’re so tuned into your needs. Overwhelm creeping back in? That’s ok, you know what routines to keep up with. We’ll replace the overwhelm and recurring excuses with confidence & ambition to help you create empowering habits that allow you to show up as your most energized & confident self. Aware of what you need and confident about what you want, you’ll have a new outlook, more energy, and a solid sustainable commitment to your health.

Are health coaches certified?

You do not need a certification to be a health coach, however, there are credible institutes where you can receive a certification. I am certified by the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.

Do you need a health coach?

The NY Times says ‘Everyone Could Use a Health Coach’. Health coaches can help you in improving every aspect of your life. A coach can support you in gaining awareness of areas of your life that may be holding you back, allowing you to let go of what no longer serves you and build new, healthy habits that fit effortlessly into your lifestyle. Do you need a health coach? No, but having one can help you get to where you want to go a lot faster.

Take athletes or executives for example; trainers and mentors are not optional for them; they are just a part of their training to get better. You can get the same results from a health coach, and you’ll get better, faster.

What are the benefits of working with a health coach?

Confidence in food and lifestyle choices, body confidence, freedom from diet culture norms, release old patterns to make way for new habits, healthier food choices and clarity on what works best for you, reconnecting with your intuition, weight loss, stress reduction, more satisfaction in relationships and career, develop a more positive outlook on life, inspired for the future, ability to recognize accomplishments, overall understanding of yourself, ability to pass your new outlook on to your kids.

The outcomes vary from person to person because each person is a bio-individual with unique needs.

Is hiring a health coach worth the investment?

Are you filled with a wave of shame and regret when you catch your reflection in the mirror because you know you should be taking better care of yourself but never make the time? Or maybe you find yourself on the couch at night, sipping wine and snacking on popcorn, feeling guilty you aren’t doing something to break this habit and not feeling motivated to try?

If this sounds like you, it is absolutely worth every penny.

One of my favorite parts of coaching is listening to your struggles and working with you in determining why you are in a constant cycle of starting and stopping healthy habits so that I can support you with creating realistic, empowering, and sustainable habits that allow you to step into your most energized and confident self.

Also, every good coach has a coach. I've had several coaches over the years (I now have one!) and each has helped me in becoming the best version of myself.

So, yes, hiring a health coach is certainly beneficial and worth the investment.

What is the investment?

Rates can range from $500 to $1,000+ per month based on location and training. Many coaches charge by the program with an option for monthly payments and have a minimum commitment. Programs are typically three, six, or twelve months long.

Does insurance cover health coaching?

Currently, health coaching is not covered by insurance.
